Mazda Unplugged

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

Sometimes a Diagnostic job can be a long journey from talking to a customer regarding the fault symptoms, collecting data, deciphering information and performing the tests to isolate the cause.

Other times, it's a simple fix.

The Mazda CX-5 that I was asked to look at seemed to have a lot of issues:

- Multiple fault lights on the dash.

- Low power delivery.

- Transmission shifting poorly.

The customer informs me that he had bought the vehicle at auction for far less than market value due to it's issues and intends to sell it once fixed (hopefully making money). He also informs me the vehicle has recently had a new engine and turbo that was replaced at a reputable workshop paid for by the previous owner.

Retrieving codes:

PCM(Powertrain Control Module)

- P048800 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Throttle Control Circuit A Range/Performance

TCM(Transmission Control Module)

- U044200 Invalid Data Received From (ECM) PCM B

ABS(Anti-Lock Brake System)

- U040100 Invalid Data Received From (ECM) (PCM)

After performing a test drive and confirming the symptoms, I started to look more closely at the codes. Both the TCM and ABS systems are known to set the above fault codes when an issue is present in the Powertrain Control Module (Engine Computer). The PCM code was in relation to a circuit fault in the EGR system.

I begin to inspect the EGR system, when I touch the connector and it moves freely, A firm press and it clicks down into position.

After clearing the fault codes and going for another test drive, I can clearly see that this vehicle is fixed and the new owners gamble has paid off.

If only they were all this easy. It seems likely that the previous owner had spent a lot of money making the required repairs, but despite their best efforts the vehicle had to be sold at auction with an electrical circuit fault. A connector, not quite plugged in.
